INTRODUCTION
Pre
colonial economy is the kind of
economy system which took place in Africa before colonialism in Africa majour
participant of pre colonial economy was the African people.Pre colonial
eeeconomy there is industrietres ,mining, Agriculture ,trading activities,
hunting and gathering .
Colonial economy was the geographical
extension of the Europe on imperialist economy in the colonies. It was
imperialist economy which was established on Africa to serve the needs of
demands of Europe imperialism or monopoly capitalists. The aim of colonial
economy was to get raw materials, market area, and area for investment and
cheap labor. types of colonial economy are Colonial Agriculture, Colonial
Mining, Colonial trade, Limited industries, Infrastructure , Financial and
Insurance institution
COMPURISON BETWEEN PRE- COLONIAL
AND COLONIAL ECONOMY
Both
engaged in agriculture production.pre colonial economy was practice the small scale agriculture
production for the domestics use and the
surplus was for trade also in colonial economy was engaged in agriculture
production at large scale plantation and
produce the cash crops for their industries in Europe .
“sisal was introduced in Kenya 1902 in large plantation
Were established in thinka
encourage the crowing of
Crops”[1]
Both
of them developed trade .pre colonial
economy was developed in barter trade system also the colonial economy was
developed in trade system. But in the colonial economy in the trade money was
the medium of Exchanging while in pre colonial economy preferred exchanging
goods for goods
“early trade was
carried out on the basic of barter
This is the exchange of goods for goods of people
Who had access to
good clay would make more
Than they needs another groups that
was killed
In iron working might exchange tool such as axes
And hand hoe for
pots”[2]
Both of them developed in
Agriculture production. Before colonial and at bthe time of colonialism African
developed in agriculture production but
before colonialism East African people were developed in small scale agriculture production for
the food staff only but in colonial economy was developed in modern
large scale agriculture and use modern way of cultivation.
“
“The rural areas were experiencing similar changes
As those in the towns
and there too the African sought
To improve their lot in
varies ways. Commercial
Agricultural become an
important stand in the improvement
And in it conflict
began to emerge between the new out
Of mission schools and
tribe chiefs who saw them as up
Start trying to interfere
in profitable monopoly.”[3]
CONTRUCTION BETWEEN PRE COLONIAL
ECONOMY AND COLONIAL ECONOMY IN EAST AFRICA:-
Colonial
economy was based on land alienation While Pre colonial economy did not based
on land alienation. Colonial economy took fertile land from Africa in order to
ensured constant production of raw material for their industrial in their home.
Through this leads African to remained landless means remained with infertile
land due to this African people were force to cultivation of cash crops in
large farms.
“ Most colonial powers confiscated land from Africa
People and resettled them
in reserves. Through land
Alienation they obtained
land for plantation agricul
Ture mission stations.
And administrative headquarters
As a result Africans were
forced to migrate at time
Into unfavorable barren
and remote land reserves. This
Was the in the Kenya
highlands, Malawi, Zimbabwe.
Congo , Angola, Namibia
and Togo. Due to land
Alienation Africa resorted
to offering cheap labor on
Which farms in order to
earn money for their living
And to pay taxes.”[4]
Colonial
economy was development in money economy While Pre colonial was development in
barter system. Pre colonial economy in east Africa was based on exchange of
goods by goods before coming of European. But colonial was based on money
system in east African. Through this people were force to use money. Also
people were force to pay tax in term of money this give chance colonial to
established money economy in African.
“ In the case of British east Africa for example
Every shilling earned had to be
backed by a British
Shilling it was the
responsibility of the of the
Established colonial
currency board such as the
Eastern Africa
currency board to ensure that all
Financial arrangements
in the respective colonies
Operated to the
colonial advantage of metropolitan
Economy moreover
trade transaction between a given
Colony and any other
country had to be effected b
Using the currency of
colonizing power.”[5]
Colonial
economy was based on force labor While Pre colonial economy did not involved in
force labor. Before colonialism labor was not commodities. Through this African
was force to work in plantation, mining, and industrial for low wages.
Therefore African was force to work in their company hence destruction of
Africa industry and manufacture industry.
“the France , German, and Portuguese followed
A similar policy of
force labor and unpaid labor
Force labor was
required to reduce costs that were
Needed in public
services. In the British colonies
Force labor was
practiced as well. In Zimbabwe in
1897, the native
regulation act was passed forcing
African chiefs to
provide laborers at low cost.”[6]
Colonial
economy established company in Africa, While Pre colonial did not established
company. These companies were responsible for expatriating great amounts of
wealth from African many of these companies started during the slave trade.
They engaged in the following works.
They brought raw materials cheaply in Africa and exported them , they
insured the property of the settlers. They imported manufactured goods. They
invested in mining and plantation.
“In east Africa, Smith Mackenzie Cascottish Company
Of Mackinnon, Ralli Brothers, leslie and Anderson,
Broke Bond. Companies
Franchise Afriques Occidentale
(C. F. A. O.) Societe
commercial Quest Africaine (S.C.O.A.)
The United African
Company (U. A. C). [7]
CONCLUSION
Eventuary the colonial economy and the pre colonial
economy there is the similarities and differences in the but all I all the colonial economy ams
at destroying African economy in all term socially ,economically,
politically So that his colonial economy
destroyed the African by introduction of taxation, low wages ,forced labours
