1. Write short notes on the following concepts Icons, Desktop, Taskbar, Windows
and Mouse
(a) Icons: An icon is
a small graphical representation of a program or files that, when clicked on,
will be run or opened. For example, if you were to double-click on the My
Computer icon, it would open Windows Explorer and double-clicking a document or file icon would open that
document in the associated program.
(b) Desktop: A desktop is
a personal computer that fits on or under a desk. They
usually consist of a monitor, keyboard, mouse and either a horizontal or
vertical (tower) form factor. Unlike a laptop, which is portable, a desktop computer is
meant to stay at one location.
(c) Taskbar: A Taskbar is a visual device on the desktop that typically shows the
user which applications (tasks) are currently active and running. Also includes icons for
commonly-used utilities such as the system clock and antivirus software.
The taskbar is a
movable, concealable icon bar that is set on the very edge of the graphical
user interface (GUI) desktop and serves as a launching pad for applications as
well as a holder for icons indicating running programs.
(d) Windows: The window is a
separate viewing area on a computer display screen in a system that allows
multiple viewing areas as part of a graphical user interface. Windows are
managed by a windows manager as part of a windowing system. A window can usually be resized by
the user. For example, it can be stretched on any side, minimized, maximized,
and closed.
(e) Mouse: A mouse refers to a small device used to point to and select items
on your computer screen. Mice are of many shapes. It's small, oblong, and
connected to the system unit by a long wire that resembles a tail. Some are
wireless. A mouse usually has two buttons: the left button right button. Many
mice also have a wheel between the two buttons, which allows you to scroll
smoothly through screens of information.
