African countries like many of developing countries placed considerable importance in the role of education in promoting economic and social development after the achievement of independence  the education system was expected to fulfill.n  two objectives the technical objectives of furnishing future power with skills and knowledge and social objectives of inculcating values which contribute to the enrichment of peoples lives.
Development of education in Tanzania was very slow by the late of 50’s there were  only two government secondary schools and two voluntary agency schools which provide combridge schools certificate courses those government schools were tabora and mission school were st Andrews, minaki and st fransis pugu  numbers of secondary school was 10government and 14 voluntary schools in Zanzibar  there were limited secondary schools Africans who desired such an education studied in secondary schools in mainland Tanzania  makerere being a universities collage  for east Africa provided Tanzanian students with higher education
The following are the factors which led the origin and the development of universities in Tanzania since independence  the role of Tanzania universities is to make sure that,
To produce skilled human resources those skilled people were prepared in order to do services in public and private institutions in order to help the societies of Tanzania at different sectors for example universities produce varieties of faculties like health universities in producing the proffesionals doctors and nurses in helping the communities there is also another services like schools, agriculture sectors also at that time the majority of Tanzania like Julius nyerere were the among those who has their professionals he was teacher. Developing relevant curriculum which reflects context and priorities of their societies this curriculum helps to goes with the needs of societies, Tanzania was among of the first countries to transform its education system to respond to unemployment problems the transformation aimed at curriculum change, the arusha declaration was promulgated in  February 1967 it has an intention of building societies which everyone works and there is no exploitation .
To foster national patriotism the universities education has also been expected to foster national patriotism this led the Tanzania communities to change their attitude and practices to ensure sustainable development to the Tanzania societies since independence by ensuring that they increase many universities and make sure that many citizens they got education which help them for self realization. And to employ themselves. The following is the speech of first chancellor of the university of east Africa in 1963  julius nyerere urgued the university of east Africa
“… work against prejudices of any kind searching always for that elusive thing truth it in this manner that the university will contribute to our development because the fight against prejudice  is vital for progress in any field and this may mean standing out against expressed beliefs of the majority,… if the university is real to serve us in this fashion, it must of course guard it self against intellectual and scientific prejudice which take the form of refusal to think a fresh about a traditional ways of doing things… African nationalism is  sweeping away tribalism because it is obvious that one cannot be a nationalist and a tribalist” pg 51.
To built universities within national, regional and international visibility and reputation this is main goals of building different universities for the aim of sustainable development particular in Africa has been emphasized the universities education has been assigned roles to redeem African societies and itself of development challenges thus since independence.
To create intellectual communities to solve development problems of their societies this interlectual communities helps in solving various problems in the societies like building of schools, hospitals and soon and ensuring that there was enough intellectuals like professional teachers, docters, nurses and soon who help the communities.
To develop societies this also is the main aim of developing the universities in Tanzania for the purpose of making sure that every body should be able to get development and participating in the developing the whole societies of Tanzania this was begin since independence as I quoted
“african countries like many of developing countries placed considerable importance in the role of education in promoting economic and social development after the achievement of independence” pg 20.
To sum up the point above mentioned is amoung of the factors which led the occurance of the origin and the development of Tanzania universities which had an intention of producing a lot of universities which had an aim of promoting different interlectuals which will serve in different sectors like public institutions and private sectors  since independence and until now during that period the higher education used is like makerere universities as an east Africa university and the n later in  1970 university of Dar es salaam exist under the leadership nyerere as a first chancellor.
