5. THE HOLY SPIRIT
God the Eternal Spirit was active with the Father and the Son in Creation, incarnation, and redemption. He inspired the writers of Scripture. He filled Christ’s life with power. He draws and convicts human beings; and those who respond he renews and transforms into the image of God. Sent by the Father and the Son to be always with his children, he extends spiritual gifts to the church, empowers it to bear witness to Christ, and in harmony with the Scriptures, leads it into all truth.
    The Holy Spirit is one person of the Godhead. He was active in the world even before God created life on earth. He inspired the writing of the Bible.
ØHe was active in the work of Creation. Genesis 1:1-2
ØHe was active in the incarnation of Christ. Luke 1:35
ØHe played an active role in Christ’s redemptive work on earth. Luke 4:18
ØHe inspired those who wrote the Bible. 2 Peter 1:21
    The Spirit is active today in drawing people to God and in assisting Christians.
ØHe attracts people to God. Revelation 22:17
ØHe convicts people of their sinfulness and need of God’s forgiveness. John 16:7-13
ØHe brings about the new birth. John 3:3-8
ØHe leads the church into all truth. John 14:26, 15:26-27
ØThe truth he leads to is in harmony with the Bible. Isaiah 8:20
ØHe is always with us, comforting and helping us. John 14:16-18
ØHe gives spiritual gifts to the church. Ephesians 4:11-12
ØHe empowers the the church to bear witness to Christ. Acts 1:8
ØHe can be grieved away if we ignore his promptings. Ephesians 4:30
ØThe Christian’s body is the Spirit’s temple. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
ØWe are sealed by the Spirit as children of God. Ephesians 1:13-14
